Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th as a federal holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. A Union General, Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform ensalved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. This announcemnt put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued for two two and a half years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln.
The free event features live entertainment, free health screenings, educational workshops, youth essay contest, children activities, ethnic arts and crafts, vendors, games and the finest authentic soul food.
