On June 27, New Pathways for Youth proudly hosted its first-ever Summer Fair & Hoops Tournament at the Westside Multigenerational Center in Tempe, bringing together almost 100 participants, including youth, mentors, and NPFY staff, for a memorable day of sports, creativity, connection, and fun. Made possible through the generous support of the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation, the event celebrated summer, community, and the limitless potential of young people when they are surrounded by encouragement, opportunity, and caring mentors.

The day was filled with energy and excitement as youth took to the basketball court at the Westside Multi-Generational Center for friendly competition, skill-building activities, and teamwork. Participants also explored their creativity during an arts and self-expression workshop, where they painted mini canvases and created artwork that reflected their unique personalities and aspirations.

One of the day’s most inspiring moments came when members of the Arizona State University Sun Devil Women’s Basketball Team joined the event. The athletes spent time engaging with youth, offering encouragement, sharing their experiences, and demonstrating what can be achieved through hard work, education, and perseverance. Their genuine enthusiasm and positive energy made a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.

The excitement continued as members of the Phoenix Suns Dancers taught participants some of their signature moves, creating an atmosphere filled with confidence, joy, and lots of smiles. Youth and mentors were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, express themselves, and have fun, bringing energy, music, and laughter to the space. More than just a dance lesson, the experience gave participants a chance to build confidence, connect with one another, and celebrate their individuality in a supportive, uplifting environment.

At New Pathways for Youth, we are committed to helping young people see new possibilities for their futures. Experiences like the Summer Fair give youth a chance to connect with inspiring role models and try something new. Whether on the court, learning to dance, in the art room, or alongside dedicated mentors and community partners, these moments reinforce that their goals are within reach.

“Our youth and mentors made memories on the basketball court, in the dance class, and in the art room at our Summer Fair & Hoops Tournament. They tried on new skills, strengthened their relationships, and enjoyed the thrill of competition,” said Karen Johnson, CEO of New Pathways for Youth. “We are grateful to the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation, the ASU Women’s Basketball Team, and all the partners and volunteers who made this fun day possible.”

Throughout the event, youth and mentors enjoyed lunch together, refueling after an active morning than with pizza. During lunch, the room buzzed with conversation as youth and mentors swapped stories, laughed together, and reflected on their favorite moments from the morning. Participants stayed cool and hydrated while building relationships, developing new skills, and creating lasting memories. Each attendee also received an official Summer Fair t-shirt to commemorate the day.

Events like the Summer Fair & Hoops Tournament are possible because of the power of community partnership and the unwavering commitment of NPFY’s volunteer mentors, who walk alongside youth as they navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and pursue their goals.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation, the ASU Sun Devil Women’s Basketball Team, the Phoenix Suns Dancers, the City of Tempe and every mentor, volunteer, and supporter who helped make our inaugural Summer Fair a success. It was a meaningful day for our youth, one that reflects why this work matters and the impact of a supportive community.
