New Pathways for Youth Celebrates 35 Years of Impact in Phoenix
Phoenix, AZ, October 15, 2024 — New Pathways for Youth (NPFY), a leading nonprofit empowering teens and young adults in Phoenix, hosted a memorable Champions of Transformation event, celebrating 35 years of impact. The evening recognized those individuals who have played a pivotal role in transforming the lives of Phoenix youth.
A highlight of the night was the recognition of DPR Construction as a Corporate Champion of Youth. Since 2016, DPR Construction has been a key partner in NPFY’s mission, contributing to workforce development programs, internships, scholarships, and volunteerism among their employees and leadership. Their ongoing collaboration has enabled many young people to explore new career opportunities in the construction field.
The event also honored Cathy Todd West and Julie Frisoni Shumway with the Wendell Cook Champion of Youth Award. Both women are founding mentors of NPFY, who have remained dedicated to the organization’s vision, serving as Board members, Emeritus Council members, and NPFY Level Up Scholarship reviewers. Their leadership and long-standing commitment continue to inspire others in the NPFY community.
“New Pathways for Youth has thrived for 35 years in Phoenix because of the strong support we have in the community,” shared Karen D. Johnson, Ph.D., President & CEO. “We are so grateful for corporate partners like DPR Construction and individual champions like Cathy West and Julie Shumway, for their tireless dedication to our mission and the youth we serve.”
“There are no words to describe the gratitude for this woman,” shared Nita Wilson, one of Cathy Todd West’s mentees from over 30 years ago. “She kept showing up in my life, reminding me how much I was worth, even when I didn’t know. She is one of the heroes who make it possible for NPFY to do the work they do.”
The evening offered mentors, staff, donors, and supporters a chance to reflect on the impact of NPFY’s LEVEL UP mentoring program, which pairs youth with caring adults who help guide their personal, academic, and emotional development. Mentoring continues to be one of the most effective ways to improve outcomes for youth, providing them with the support they need to succeed.
NPFY’s holistic approach also includes programming for parents and caregivers, ensuring a strong foundation of support for each youth. Program managers offer ongoing guidance to mentors, fostering a strong sense of community within the organization.
