August 2019 Newsletter

This past month, New Pathways for Youth took one of its biggest-ever steps, announcing the purchase of a 10,500 square foot building on Jefferson Street in Downtown Phoenix. It will become our new permanent home when renovations are completed in 2020.

It’s a step we’ve been working towards for many years, and it was made possible only through the community of donors, mentors, volunteers and youth supporting us and shaping our organization over 30 years serving Phoenix.

On July 18th, we held a kickoff “wall breaking” event where our youth and young adults got the chance to wield sledgehammers and give us a jump start on our renovations—busting down metaphorical and physical walls inscribed with our youths’ individual dreams for a better future, infusing the space with their energy once opened and operating.

The event marked a moment of transformation for our organization and for our community. When we move into the new space, we will be able to meet our expansion goals—recruiting 1,500 mentors by 2024 and increasing personal development, life skills and 1:1 mentoring programs in community cohorts. We will also look to double the size of our staff and place additional focus on coaching and development for mentors and youth, case managers and curriculum development.

There are multiple opportunities to become a part of our growing honor roll supporting the renovation of our new home. Contact Christy McClendon to learn more.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, feel free to reach out and attend one of our mentor introduction sessions, Tuesdays at 6:15 pm and the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 7:30 am.

New Pathways has been selected by Valley Partnership as the recipient of their 2019 Valley Partnership Community Project. Valley Partnership is the city’s premier advocacy group for responsible development, and the event brings leaders and members of the Valley’s developmental community together for a day of service.

The project will enable a courtyard addition to New Pathways for Youth’s  future location at 9th Street and Jefferson, ensuring a welcoming outdoor space for social bonding and connection to nature.

Valley Partnership CEO, Cheryl Lombard, shared her feelings about how special this project is to her and the organization and said that selecting New Pathways provided them with the opportunity “to make an impact in many ways.”

This event is so important because the 400 youth and young adults we serve annually experience extreme poverty and hardship four times that of other youth. When community members and leaders come together to show their support, it not only shows us what we are capable of, but it also shows others in the community how they can work together to champion our youth.

Are you looking to make an impact? We’re hiring! Our Program Coordinator, Alejandra, shares why she loves working with our youth and mentors.

I love my work because we are addressing a real challenge in this world, poverty and adversity. We are not just a mentoring program, we are a movement towards breaking the cycle of poverty and adversity by creating honest relationships and developing skills that tap into the best versions of ourselves. Plus, it’s fun working here! I have the opportunity to connect with colleagues and mentors with different backgrounds and stories and who also believe that our youth deserve the future they desire.

Who do you know who would make a great fit for our team? We are looking for highly qualified professionals with a passion for serving youth and experience in case management or fundraising.
