Spring is an exciting time for our new mentors and mentees. Our Spring program launch brings youth together with the mentors who will help to transform their lives. This season’s launch, held April 28–30, saw 35 mentors and their youth learn how to identify and address self-destructive thought processes and declare new possibilities for their future. Using New Pathways’ evidence-based curriculum, matches are introduced to a shared language that helps them engage in positive, foundational dialogue.
Every year, we watch as these relationships blossom and evolve, enabling the hundreds of youth in our Transformative Mentoring Program to change destrucitve behaviors and reform core beliefs standing between them and achieving their goals.
This year was no different, and our always-inspiring homecoming gave our matches the chance to celebrate the start of these new, transformative relationships. Each picture is worth a thousand words.

This past month New Pathways celebrated the conclusion of our second successful year of the Mentor Match Challenge. This campaign challenges our amazing mentors to double their impact, contributing hard-earned dollars to support their transformative mentoring. And for the second year in a row, they stepped up in a big way!
But MMC wouldn’t be what it is without the generosity of our dear friends from Leslie’s Pool Supplies. Leslie’s matches every dollar donated by our mentors up to $10,000—an incredible gesture that drove this year’s total way past our goal of $20,000. That’s right, together we raised $26,000 that will go toward improving youth outcomes in our community!
Our thanks goes out to everyone who participated and to Leslie’s for continuing a partnership that is truly transforming lives. Why New Pathways for Youth? How did you become involved with the organization
We were introduced to New Pathways for Youth in 2015. We became acquainted with the organization and were so impressed with the incredible success stories and impact the Mentors have on their Mentees. We realized as an employer in Phoenix that we had an opportunity to provide employment opportunities to youth and give them real world experiences they may not have otherwise had. In April of 2015, we hired our first New Pathways youth!
Why is it important to you to give back to the community?
We truly value the communities in which we operate, and that’s why it’s important that we do what we can to support the causes that are near and dear to us. We appreciate our relationship with New Pathways because of their focus on supporting children.
We are making a real difference in the lives of children at risk here in the Valley!
Where did Leslie’s culture of giving come from?
from our people. We have some of the kindest, most generous team members! They have really been the ones to create this culture here at Leslie’s. Following Hurricane Katrina back in 2005,
we had so many team members reaching out wanting to provide financial assistance to fellow Leslie’s team members who had been impacted.
That led to the creation of the Team Leslie’s Cares (TLC) Charity Fund. The mission of the fund is to provide a means for our team members to make contributions and to provide an opportunity to help fellow Team Members in times of financial distress resulting from a natural disaster or personal tragedy.
That generosity and caring spirit is what makes Leslie’s such a great place to work and inspires us to support great causes like New Pathways!
What’s one thing about Leslie’s Pool Supplies that most people probably don’t know?
Most people, especially here in Phoenix, think of Leslie’s as a small company and don’t realize the footprint that we have. But we operate more than 900 stores in 35 states! We’re growing at an incredible rate and are excited to continue that trend.
What is some advice you can give to other individuals or businesses still sitting on the sidelines?
New Pathways is doing amazing things in our community! They are transforming the lives of youth that wouldn’t normally have many opportunities. Look at your business and get creative with how you can get involved. Once you spend some time with New Pathways and understand the incredible impact they are making,
you’ll be compelled to become a part of that story!

Saturday, May 20, Hon Kachina held their annual awards banquet at Camelback Inn Resort & Spa celebrating six volunteers from around Arizona whose contributions go above and beyond. Our very own Julie Frisoni Shumway was one of this year’s honorees and we can say from her years of service to New Pathways, that “above and beyond” only begins to describe what Julie means to our community.
As we highlighted in our April issue, Julie came to New Pathways when we were in our infancy. Back then, we were a handful of volunteers serving 40 youth. Now—you know the story. New Pathways anchors a community of mentors and volunteers serving more than 500 youth annually. Thanks to Julie and our many dedicated supporters, New Pathways is able to reach and transform so many lives and bring positive outcomes to communities in need.

Graduation is in the air and that means it’s time to get a jump start on next year’s Back to School Drive! Throughout the summer months, we’re collecting everything our youth need to succeed at school: notebooks, clothing, pens and pencils, backpacks, computers, etc. Through our Back to School Drive, you have the opportunity to enhance our mission of providing academic support to each youth that comes through our doors.
Our focus on academic achievement is about so much more than grades and college readiness. The long-term outcomes for any community tie directly to the quality education of our youth. If we want to break cycles of poverty, drugs and violence, close opportunity gaps—those things are impossible without creating a strong path to a good education. And it begins with having the right supplies.
