Unlocking Healing Through Creativity at the Resilient Hearts Symposium
Phoenix, AZ | August 26, 2026
When youth are seen, heard, and supported with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges, transformation happens. That is one of the principles at the core of our programs.
Recently, our team attended Art Heals Arizona’s annual Resilient Hearts Symposium, a dynamic one-day gathering of youth-serving professionals, mentors, educators, and artists dedicated to child well-being.
The event offered an immersive look into creative care: using artistic expression, somatic movement, and mindfulness as vehicles for community healing, self-regulation, and personal growth.
The Science of Safe Expression
Neurobiological research by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk demonstrates that toxic stress causes Broca’s area—the brain’s verbal processing center—to temporarily go “offline”. Trauma-informed expressive arts create a pathway to expressionallowing youth to safely process and externalize implicit emotional memory before translating those experiences into words.
“Art provides the bridge. By using creative tools, youth can process and express complex emotions before having to verbalize them.”
– Pashion Muhammad, New Pathways for Youth
The symposium gave our Programs and Training and Curriculum teams a meaningful opportunity to experience creative care in action through hands-on activities that encouraged movement, mindfulness, connection, and grounding. These practices reinforced how creative expression can help young people process emotions, stay present, and build a stronger sense of self-awareness.
Translating Creative Care into Practice Programming
The takeaways from the symposium directly mirror the core curriculum distinctions we cultivate across our mentoring journeys with tyouth and mentors at the practices of our Level Up program. Giving youth accessible artistic outlets allows them to decompress, build focus, and regulate their nervous systems naturally while mapping out their futures.
“One of the applications I’ve learned is that while we’re talking about goals or topics on Power Ups, having creative resources available allows them to tap into their imagination on their own and stay in the present moment.”
– Dulce Guerrero, Program Coordinator at NPFY
“I saw so many connections between the distinctions that we teach here at New Pathways and a lot of the values and themes that were coming across at that conference.”
– Hunter Delaney, Program Coordinator at NPFY
Sustaining the Caregivers
In human services, community healing begins with caring for the mentors, educators, and coordinators guiding the work. Stepping out of the daily routine to explore mindfulness and shared creativity reinforced an essential lesson: sustaining our own well-being empowers us to show up with empathy and authenticity for our youth every single day.
We are grateful to Art Heals Arizona for creating a meaningful space where youth-serving professionals could learn, reflect, and experience the power of creative care firsthand. Equipped with fresh perspectives and practical grounding tools, our team is energized to bring these practices into our mentoring spaces, where young people are supported as they build resilience, deepen self-awareness, and continue moving toward the limitless potential we believe every youth already holds.
