New Pathways for Youth Celebrates 2025 Graduates with $45,000 in Scholarships
Phoenix, AZ (July 23, 2025) — At New Pathways for Youth (NPFY), graduation isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of something greater. On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, 15 young people from across the Valley were honored at NPFY’s annual Scholarship Celebration, hosted at the Ultra Club at PHX Arena with the generous support of the Phoenix Suns/Mercury Foundation.
This year, NPFY awarded $45,000 in scholarships to support graduates as they take the next step in their journey toward college, career, and independent adulthood. The 2025 scholarship cohort embodies resilience, transformation, and the power of believing in a new future. With the support of dedicated mentors, Program Coordinators, and community partners, these graduates have overcome immense challenges and emerged ready to pursue their dreams with courage and purpose.
Jemsa H., one of this year’s scholarship recipients, shared how NPFY shaped her path forward:
“What began as a place to find guidance has evolved into a foundation for my future.”
That transformation is echoed by fellow awardee Alan C., who emphasized the importance of continuous learning and personal growth:
“Every chance to learn and become better is a gift because if you’re not growing and learning and living better, then there’s no way to upgrade your life or your understanding of it.”
Below is the list of this year’s scholarship recipients, honored for their dedication, resilience, and commitment to their future goals:
Level Up Scholarship Recipients:
Alexis B., Alan C., Carlos C., Yaretzy M., Jessica R., Gricel V., Jemsa H., Cruz M., Angelina R., Lizbeth V., and Khia W.
Dew Family Scholarship Recipients:
Itzel B., Karen J., and Maurice S.
Chris Yakscoe Memorial Scholarship Recipient:
Pedro Portillo
Each award represents more than financial support—it symbolizes unwavering belief in our youth and a long-term investment in community transformation.
“Graduation isn’t just a finish line—it’s a launching pad,” said Dr. Karen Johnson, CEO of New Pathways for Youth. “Every young person we celebrated has faced adversity that would stop many in their tracks. But with the Level Up program, mentorship, community, and their own determination, they’ve redefined what’s possible.”
The celebration was elevated by remarks from Phoenix City Councilmember Kesha Hodge Washington, who reflected on the inspiration drawn from the youth:
“I look forward to seeing what they do next. They are encouraging and inspiring, and I want to say thank you to NPFY and their mentors for helping the next generation pursue their educational and personal goals.”
The morning also featured a special address by Alicia Nuñez, President & CEO of Chicanos por la Causa, who shared:
“Make asking for help your strength, and remember—you represent your family’s dreams and your community’s hopes. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
The continued growth of the scholarship program was made possible through the generosity of our donors and partners. We extend heartfelt thanks to The Ibis Foundation, The Dougherty Foundation, Jim and Mimi Dew, and Julie Johnson for their enduring support.
We also gratefully acknowledge our Scholarship Review Committee—Lauren Frank, Cal Gauss, Andrew Norris, Julie Frisoni Shumway, Mark Voigt, and John Williams—whose thoughtful reviews ensured these awards reached the most deserving youth.
A heartfelt thank you to our host, the Phoenix Suns Mercury Foundation, for making this unforgettable celebration possible—and a special thanks to Sarah Krahenbuhl for her generous support.
As these graduates take their next steps—whether toward college, careers, or new life chapters—NPFY remains by their side, continuing to champion their growth through one-on-one mentorship, goal setting, and transformative experiences.
